BJP’s HP Polls ‘Magnanifesto’; State Has 2.02 Lakh Jobless, But Will Offer 8 Lakh Jobs If It Comes T

According to May-August, 2022 unemployment report by the think-tank Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the state's unemployed workforce is 2.02 lakh.

Chandigarh: While there are 65,000 jobs in the government sector in Himachal Pradesh, and the unemployed workforce in the state is 2.04 lakh, yet Bharatiya Janata Party BJP has announced that it will provide eight lakh jobs to unemployed youth in the state if it comes to power. The state is going to the polls on November 12.

According to May-August, 2022 unemployment report by the think-tank Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the state’s unemployed workforce is 2.02 lakh.

Notably, BJP has resorted to such populist announcements whenever it is fighting anti-incumbency. In 2012, when former Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal was on his way out, BJP presented a manifesto in which too the party had announced 10 lakh jobs to the youth. The saffron party still lost the elections. However, five years later in 2017, since anti-incumbency was against the Congress party, BJP knew they will be able to make it to Vidhan Sabha without promising much. Then, the party won a solid 48 seats in the Vidhan Sabha of 68, without any promise of jobs.

Many are calling the BJP’s promise of providing eight lakh jobs with an election gimmick. Sources say, the data of eight lakh unemployed youth in the state include 66,890 unemployed people who are between the age of 41 and 60. This data comes from Employment Exchange. Apart from it, 2.19 lakh youth registered with the Employment Exchange are those between the age of 31 and 40. Sources in the labour department said, most people register with the Employment Exchange before they are 25.

Many have found jobs in the private sector or outside the state but their names continue to be in the list which is why the number of unemployed youth is so huge. “After all, there are those who are in their 50s and registered with Employment Exchange. Therefore this data does not present a true picture of unemployment in the state,” said a source in the Labour department.

“The estimated unemployment in the hill state is not more than about 2.50 lakh while the number of vacancies in the government sector is 65,000. If the government is able to provide employment to even 2.50 lakh people in five years, it will definitely have a strong chance to repeat.” He further goes on to say, “If about 1.50 lakh employees covered under New Pension Scheme (NPS) can threaten to topple the government, why can’t unemployed youth if their number is eight lakh.

”Senior BJP leader of the state Ganesh Dutt says, “Our promise is not just about providing employment in the government sector which of course has little in terms of availability of jobs but also generating employment in the private sector.”

On being asked, does Himachal has the potential to provide those many jobs in the private sector, he said things are being worked out. Prof Harish Thakur a keen watcher of Himachal affairs says, “These eight lakh jobs could be the cumulative number to offer jobs in full five years.”
