India has successfully conducted the first flight test of the second stage Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) interceptor AD-1. The test was conducted from Dr Abdul Kalam Island, formerly known as Wheeler Island, off the coast of Odisha. The flight tests were conducted with the participation of all BMD weapon system elements based at different locations.
This weapon is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles at long range. A DRDO official was quoted in the report as saying, “AD-1 is a long-range interceptor missile designed for both low exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric interception of long-range ballistic missiles and aircraft. "
The AD-1 has a two-phase solid motor. The interceptor is equipped with an indigenously developed advanced control system, navigation and guidance algorithm to accurately guide the vehicle to the target.
