His early education took place in Bhavnagar. However, after that his family moved to Mumbai. Pankaj Udhas studied from St. Xavier's College. Pankaj Udhas took training in playing tabla at the Sangeet Natya Academy of Rajkot. He also took training from Gwalior Gharana singer Navrang Nagpurkar.

First earning in the world of music-

 Pankaj Udhas got his first opportunity to sing on a big stage during the India-China war. During that time he sang 'Aye mere watan ke logon..' on stage. His voice had captivated everyone. A viewer gave him a reward of Rs 51 for this song. This was Pankaj Udhas's first earning in the world of music.

First break in Bollywood from the film 'Kaamna' –

Pankaj got his first break in Bollywood in the year 1972 from the film 'Kaamna'. Pankaj Udhas launched his first album 'Aahat' in the year 1980.
