Railway policeman sent for mental health check-up on killings: "No communal angle"

New Delhi: A Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawan who killed four people on a Jaipur-Mumbai train on Monday has been sent for a mental health assessment, government sources said today, ruling out any communal angle to the incident.

Chetan Singh, 33, killed his senior and shot dead three other passengers on the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express. He was arrested while trying to escape.

Railway ministry sources said a "comprehensive mental and psychological health assessment" of the RPF personnel is being done. He has rejected the communal angle raised by the video and posts on social media - and pointed out that the accused had shot Hindus as well, including his boss.

Four RPF personnel, including Chetan Singh and Tikaram Meena, boarded the train at Surat in Gujarat as part of the escort group deployed on long-distance trains to protect passengers and goods.

Eyewitnesses say that Singh, who seemed agitated, lost his temper and shot his senior. He then went on to shoot three more coaches, including 48-year-old Ajgar Abbas Shaikh and 62-year-old Abdul Kadarbhai Mohammed Hussain Bhanpurwala.

Sources said Singh showed signs of ill health in the morning, after which he was asked to take rest. He rested for a while and then insisted that he was fine, after which he resumed duty.

The Railway Ministry said that it will investigate the incident thoroughly after receiving the medical report.

Constable Chetan Singh's family described him as short tempered and angry.

Western Railway has said that they are conducting a high level enquiry. He told that Singh was posted in Lower Parel.
