For the first time in India, a robotic kidney transplant has been performed. The operation was performed on a 45-year-old patient suffering from kidney failure. Until now, this advanced technology had only been used in select hospitals in the US and Europe.

For the first time in the country, a robot-assisted kidney transplant has been performed in a government hospital. The successful surgery was performed on a 45-year-old patient at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. This operation marks a milestone in AIIMS's history.

AIIMS doctors performed the four-hour surgery.

Dr. Virendra Bansal, Professor and Chief Transplant Surgeon, Department of Surgery, AIIMS Delhi, said that the surgery was performed using the Da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system. This advanced technology makes the surgery highly precise, less painful, and results in faster recovery.

Dr. Bansal said that the patient's operation lasted approximately four hours and was performed under general anesthesia. With the help of the robot, small incisions were made in the abdomen, which reduced blood loss and reduced pain for the patient.

The donated kidney was inserted into the patient's body through a 4-5 cm incision .

The kidney was then connected to the patient's blood vessels and bladder using a robotic system. The patient's new kidney began functioning immediately after the surgery. The patient's creatinine level dropped to 1.2, and he was discharged from the hospital in just 10 days.

Dr. Krishna Asuri, another professor in the surgery department at AIIMS, said the patient had been on dialysis for about six months. After testing and identifying a donor, the transplant was performed on September 3.

Following the success of the first case, four more patients have received robotic transplants, and all are healthy.

Why is the country's first robotic transplant surgery special?

AIIMS recently introduced the Da Vinci Xi system, allowing even complex surgeries to be performed in less time and with less pain. This technology will significantly transform the public health system. Now, even in government hospitals, patients will be able to receive state-of-the-art and precise treatment. The incidence of end-stage kidney disease is steadily increasing in India. In such a situation, technologies like robotic surgery will make treatment more precise and safe.

How is robotic surgery performed?

In this technique, doctors don't operate with their hands, but instead control four robotic arms from a console. These arms display internal parts of the body in magnified 3-D images obtained from a camera. The machine replicates the doctor's every move, making the surgery extremely precise and safe. While hands have limitations in normal surgery, robotic systems can reach areas where human hands cannot.
