Lockheed Martin Saildrone USV Project: Lockheed Martin and Saildrone are developing drone boats for the US Navy that will be equipped with sensors and AI technology, such as the ability to detect enemy ships and submarines.  

Lockheed Martin Saildrone USV Project: American defense company Lockheed Martin has invested $50 million (approximately Rs 415 crore) in a company called Saildrone. The purpose of this investment is to develop Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs), meaning unmanned maritime combat boats that are ready for direct combat. Let us give you complete information about this today.  What is this project?

Lockheed Martin and Saildrone are working together to develop combat-ready combat drone boats for the US Navy. These boats will be equipped with AI and sensors that can monitor enemy ships, submarines, and missiles. The two companies will jointly test these boats with real weapons in 2026.  What technologies will be added? Lockheed Martin will equip these boats with lethal weapon systems such as its JAGM Quad Launcher (JQL) and Mk 70 Vertical Launch System (VLS). This will enable these USVs to conduct maritime surveillance as well as engage in real combat. These boats will be operated using a Secure Command System, meaning they can be controlled remotely, and will also have security technology to protect against hacking.

Saildrone's Experience Saildrone has been working on maritime missions since 2013. Its drone boats are already conducting surveillance and survey work in many marine areas around the world. The US Navy first used Saildrone's boats in 2021, and they continue to operate in various parts of the world today. 

What does this move mean for India? India is also focusing on Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) and Autonomous Drones in its naval fleet. DRDO and the Indian Navy are jointly researching indigenous Sea Drone technology. Lockheed Martin's move is a good example for India of how AI and robotics will become a key strength of the Navy's maritime security systems in the future.

New jobs and benefits:This project will provide the US Navy with modern technology and create new jobs. The company plans to build these drone boats in Austal USA and other American shipyards, which will also boost the country's defense industry.
