Pakistan: 8 terrorists attack police office in Karachi, 4 killed

This is the latest attack on security forces in the midst of an increase in terrorist attacks across the country. The attack took place at around 7.10 pm local time.

KARACHI: Eight heavily armed terrorists stormed the police chief's office in Karachi, Pakistan's most populous city, on Friday, following which two terrorists and two others were killed in a fierce exchange of fire between paramilitary forces and the assailants. This is the latest attack on security forces in the midst of an increase in terrorist attacks across the country. The attack took place at around 7.10 pm local time.

Several policemen were injured

A spokesman for the Karachi police confirmed in a statement that the headquarters of the Karachi police chief had come under attack. "The firing is continuing," the statement said. Karachi Police Chief Javed Odho also confirmed in a tweet that his office was attacked. He said that the security forces have given a strong response. Senior police officer DIG (South) Irfan Baloch said that two terrorists were killed during the encounter and a policeman and a civilian also lost their lives. He said that six other people, including four policemen, were injured.

Terrorists entered from the rear

He said, “Some terrorists entered from the rear of the building, while two wearing police uniforms entered through the main gate.” He said that the police have surrounded the terrorists inside the building and one floor of the building has been evacuated. "There are about six terrorists still inside the building," he added. The dreaded terrorist group Pakistan Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. The terrorists first hurled six hand grenades at the main premises of the Karachi Police Chief's Office building and then entered the premises.

A police source said, “Heavy exchange of fire is going on between paramilitary forces, police and the attackers. All the mobile vans of the district and area were immediately called to the spot to surround the attackers. The Karachi Police Chief's office is located near the city's main road leading to the airport.

Pakistan has seen an increase in terrorist attacks since November, when the Pakistan Taliban ended a month-long ceasefire with the government. Last month, a Taliban suicide bomber blew himself up at a mosque packed with worshipers in a high-security area in northwestern Peshawar city, killing more than 100 people. Most of the dead were policemen.
