Punjab floods affect over 2.56 lakh people, 15,688 evacuated, 7,144 sheltered in relief camps

PTC Web Desk: Punjab Minister for Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Hardeep Singh Mundian on Monday provided an update on the severe flood situation across the state. Continuous heavy rainfall and flooding have caused significant damage to human lives, property, crops, livestock, and basic infrastructure. 

The minister said Punjab was grappling with a severe flood situation, and large-scale relief operations were underway in affected districts. According to reports received from the districts, 15,688 persons have been moved to safe locations.The district-wise breakdown is as follows:



Gurdaspur: 5,549

Ferozpur: 3,321

Fazilka: 2,049

Pathankot: 1,139

Amritsar: 1,700

Hoshiarpur: 1,052

Kapurthala: 515

Barnala: 25

Tarn Taran: 60

Moga: 115

Mansa: 163


He said relief and rehabilitation operations were ongoing at full scale, and 129 camps had been established across the state to provide temporary shelter to homeless families. These include: Amritsar: 16;  Barnala: 1; Fazilka: 10; Ferozepur: 8; Gurdaspur: 25; Hoshiarpur: 20; Kapurthala: 4; Mansa: 1; Moga: 9; Pathankot: 14; Sangrur: 1; Patiala: 20. He said the district administrations had been directed to ensure that these centres were equipped with food, medical aid, and essential facilities.


People sheltered in relief camps


Currently, a total of 7,144 persons are residing in relief camps across the state. District-wise figures are:

Ferozepur: 3,987

Fazilka: 1,201

Hoshiarpur: 478

Pathankot: 411

Gurdaspur: 424

Amritsar: 170

Mansa: 163

Moga: 115

Kapurthala: 110

Sangrur: 60

Barnala: 25


Extent of flood damage


Punjab has reported 1,044 flood-affected villages across 12 districts. The district-wise village impact is as follows:


Amritsar: 88

Barnala: 24

Fazilka: 72

Ferozepur: 76

Gurdaspur: 321

Hoshiarpur: 94

Jalandhar: 55

Kapurthala: 115

Mansa: 77

Moga: 39

Pathankot: 82

SAS Nagar: 1


According to reports from Deputy Commissioners, a total of 2,56,107 people have been affected across the state, with the highest impact in Gurdaspur (1,45,000 people), followed by Amritsar (35,000), Ferozepur (24,015), Fazilka (21,562), Pathankot (15,053), SAS Nagar (7,000), and Kapurthala (5,650). Lesser affected districts include Barnala (59), Mansa (163), Jalandhar (653), Moga (800), and Hoshiarpur (1,152).


The minister said several agencies were providing assistance. Of the 20 NDRF teams deployed in Punjab: Pathankot: 1


Gurdaspur: 6;  Amritsar: 6; Ferozepur: 3; Fazilka: 3 and Bathinda: 1.


Additionally, the Air Force, Navy, and Army have deployed 10 platoons, while eight more units are on standby. Two engineer teams are also deployed. Nearly 35 helicopters from the Indian Air Force and Army are engaged in rescue and relief operations. BSF units have been deployed for additional support.


The minister said a total of 114 boats and one state helicopter were being used for evacuation and relief operations.


Casualties and missing persons


From August 1 to September 1, 2025, floods claimed 29 lives across 12 districts. District-wise casualties: Amritsar: 3; Barnala: 3; Bathinda: 1; Gurdaspur: 1; Hoshiarpur: 3; Ludhiana: 3; Mansa: 3; Pathankot: 6; Patiala: 1; Rupnagar: 3;  SAS Nagar: 1 and Sangrur: 1. Additionally, three persons are reported missing in Pathankot district.


Agricultural damage


The floods have also severely impacted agriculture, affecting 94,061 hectares of farmland across various districts. The worst-affected districts include:


Amritsar: 23,000 hectares

Mansa: 17,005 hectares

Kapurthala: 14,934 hectares

Tarn Taran: 11,883 hectares

Ferozepur: 11,232 hectares

Hoshiarpur: 5,971 hectares

Jalandhar: 2,800 hectares

Pathankot: 2,442 hectares

SAS Nagar: 2,000 hectares

Patiala: 1,450 hectares

Moga: 949 hectares

Ludhiana: 108 hectares

Bathinda: 97 hectares

Sri Muktsar Sahib: 84 hectares


Lesser affected areas include Fazilka (64 hectares), Gurdaspur (24), SBS Nagar (7), Malerkotla (5), Sangrur (3), Barnala (2), and Fatehgarh Sahib (1 hectare).


Relief materials are being distributed across all affected districts, and medical teams are providing healthcare services. The damage to livestock and infrastructure is still being assessed, with complete data expected once the situation stabilises.


The minister claimed that the Punjab government remained fully committed to providing immediate relief and rehabilitation to all affected families. Deputy Commissioners of all districts have been instructed to assess losses promptly to ensure timely compensation.
