Trinamool Congress leaders' statements on the Durgapur student gang rape have sparked controversy. Following Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, MPs Saugata Roy and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar have now made controversial comments on the incident, raising questions about law and order in West Bengal.

The rape case of an MBBS student in Durgapur, West Bengal, has heated up. Governor CV Anand Bose has expressed concern about the law and order situation in the state. The opposition BJP is also continuously attacking Mamata Banerjee's government. Meanwhile, after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Trinamool Congress MPs have now made controversial statements regarding the rape case, putting them under attack from opposition parties. However, Mamata Banerjee later stated that her statements were distorted and that she did not mean what is being publicized.
Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy, commenting on the rape case, said that it is not possible to provide security at every inch. Another MP, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, remarked that there is no country in the world where such incidents do not occur.
Saugata Roy said, "One should not leave the college at that time of night. The police cannot guard every spot. Therefore, caution is necessary." He also said, "Security cannot be provided at every inch. Police cannot be deployed on every street. Police can only take action after an incident occurs. They can provide security at a major intersection, but it is not possible to provide police protection everywhere."
There is no country where incidents do not happen: Kakoli
On the other hand, Trinamool Congress MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, while speaking on the Durgapur gang rape case on Monday, said that there is no society or country where such incidents do not happen.
He explained that the West Bengal government has passed the Aparajita Bill; however, it still needs the President's assent. He said, "We believe this is a heinous crime. We want the perpetrators punished. We passed the Aparajita Bill in the West Bengal Assembly, and then it went to Delhi, but the central government has not approved it. It is with the President. The President does what the central government says. Despite our demand, it has not been passed. Therefore, the responsibility lies with the central government."
BJP furious over TMC MP's statement
Commenting on the TMC MPs' statement, Siliguri BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh said, "There is a mentality of keeping women indoors, and this mentality is reflected in the statements of the Chief Minister and the MP. Can Saugata Roy say that women are being attacked at night, not during the day? So, it's not a question of day or night. I think all women should come out on the streets and protest."
